i was watching a video essay criticizing the legend of korra (here’s the link if you’re interested) and one point that was brought up was how lok had a tendency to focus on korra being beaten in graphic detail and focus on her reactions, to the extent that it was kind of weird. that made me think of how that’s a pretty common trope for female characters. then i thought of how vld plays around with it, like it does with a lot of gendered tropes.
other people have written posts on this, but the blade of marmora episode in s2 was 50% a montage of keith getting his head kicked in, in graphic detail, in a skintight bodysuit.
zarkon when he’s in a fight: neutral expression, not much conversation aside from that time he yelled at shiro for being black’s fave, not very dramatic, no bells and whistles attached, doesn’t draw fights out
haggar and lotor in fights: cackling with many facial expressions, really over the top, dramatic as hell, plays with their food
Zarkon, the saint the family, graceful warrior who just wants shit done with as quick as possible. Closest thing to a noble demon. Satan has never looked so kind compared to his family.
Lotor, the demon child, actual literal antichrist here, finally letting loose
Haggar, local sadist, queen of the underworld, controller of satan himself, mother of the antichrist. Her laughter is the last thing you hear before it all goes black.
Anyway, just your everyday reminder here that I think Lauren Montgomery is both a great writer and artist, that she’s genuinely put a lot into her characters and honestly cares about the fans, representation, portraying strong female characters, ect. I’m happy she’s an EP for Voltron and I hope I can look forward to seeing more of her work and projects in the future
