the ancestors to alteans were “life givers,” and seem to be some kind of godly beings (honerva mentions alteans having a polytheistic religion, but it’s unclear if it was still being practised by the way she said it.) sacred alteans have a special connection to the life givers, making them life givers themselves (allura, haggar, possibly alfor)
the lions, or at least the black lion, also seem to be life givers to a certain degree. it’s possible for them, or again at least black, to have control over life and death.
