It’s cute. It has potential. The theme is catchy. It’s what I expected it to be but with more hiccups. For one you can really tell it’s a crew of rookies. The format and writing style doesn’t feel like modern cartoons, but instead stuck in the 80s format, and I think that’s because the crew just didn’t have enough confidence to fully update things and generally this is their first time writing/producing/animating for TV. When it slows down it really slows down, but it’s still fun. It does not meet the hype in the slightest, which I expected. 

The villains are the best part of the show, they have the most fun interactions and dynamics and characterization. Catra is especially well-rounded and compelling, choosing to become worse and even aspire to take Shadow Weaver’s place, essentially trying to surpass her foster mother. The dynamic between Hordak and Shadow is the same as the 80s baddie and dragon, sadly. They lacked the ability to update that in a more interesting way. Shadow is a magnificent bastard with great voice and some depth to her, and her relationship with her wards is interesting. Low-key funny in some of the delivery. Scorpia is just a delight and the most likable character in the entire show. 

Now let’s talk crew. Here is where I get salty and I will be mentioning the official hyped up rep that is tokenism at its finest and why *those* people are okay with that

I’m just here going, this is what you were so smug about? This is what you were so confident about? This is what you used to shit on voltron crew and endorse harassment and negativity towards them, and still have the gall to have a voltron reference in your show? You smug snake hotshots, especially Rae, your rep is token side characters that don’t even do anything and talk for like 7 seconds in the whole show. They have no personality or trait other than they’re always together. This is what you used as your selling point to why everyone should watch you guys show the old farts how it’s done? And then reference voltron and capitalize on the fans cuz you promised them you’d do better???

Unethical tbh. Zero integrity. Being a rookie hotshot in a small industry that talks might not get you officially blacklisted, but with how everyone respects each other and are friends your ass isn’t getting hired. And for anyone wondering no, they did not do better. Shiro, Ezor, and Zethrid are characters first, people first, before their queerness. SheRa did not do that. The reason people are so happy is because they’re convinced catradora is gonna be endgame. They treat is as the rep they deserved on voltron, and that is begging disaster. Heck before the drop our fav smug rookie Rae posted catradora art and time will not look back fondly at that. And no, the tokens aren’t even explicit cuz of censorship. So their personality traits aren’t even their queerness. They have negative zero personality.
