CLAMP’s X series is hella cheap on DVD right now. I assume it’s based on the X/1999 manga? I passed on that when it came out in the US in the early 2000s, as it didn’t appeal to me at the time. I usually prefer their other work like RG Veda, Rayearth, Miyuki-chan in Wonderland, and Tokyo Babylon. I was 100% turned-off by Chobits, and couldn’t get into Cardcaptor Sakura, but I did kinda like Angelic Layer (never finished reading the manga tho). Would you recommend X, and what did you think of it?

The movie is an utter Mess do not recommend it at all! But I do enjoy the aesthetic of it. X’s problem is that it really, really enjoys the misery of the characters and it doesn’t even have a payoff. It’s been a while since I read it, and at the time I regretted reading it because this is where you stop for what, 15 years now? My relationship with it is very like-hate. It’s not the cohesive and enjoyable type like RG Veda, which also had the benefit of likable characters that you wanted to stab by the end, but for X you feel like you want to stab the characters multiple times without the likability. It’s a continuation of Tokyo Babylon so if you want the resolution with that dynamic, it’s there and it’s what you’d expect. But X just has this, utter frustration to it? I mean, I think the series might be more faithful than the movie but that isn’t really much to invest in imo. I enjoy the aesthetic till this day but my god, it makes me want to throw my computer against the room sometimes! So yeah I actually do not recommend. Btw did anyone really manage to get into Chobits with that unlikeable main character? Miyuki-chan has a likable cast but that MC in Chobits is just, horrible. I couldn’t get into the Sakura anime either nor the Rayearth oddly enough. Guess I’m more into CLAMP when they’r in pretty manga.
