A Pseudonym To Fool Him – Lunarium – Voltron: Legendary Defender [Archive of Our Own]

My piece for the Zaggar Zine hosted by @galrashipzine! 😀 This was so much fun to do!

My fic and title was inspired by Kate Bush’s song “Babooshka” because I adore this song, and imagining the events unfolding with Haggar and Zarkon was too perfect to pass up. (Now just imagine Haggar singing this the song while wearing THAT. ;D )

A Pseudonym To Fool Him – Lunarium – Voltron: Legendary Defender [Archive of Our Own]

I agree with you 100%. I believed they were siblings since s4 and onward. I dropped the twins theory after the flashback so I now believe Krolia was pregnant with Acxa when she left Tex (Heith?). The creative team doesn’t exactly have the best track record of being completely honest before a season is released (remember when they said Allura wasn’t Paladin material right before S3?) so I can’t take Josh seriously. We’ll find out the deal in S7 since Acxa was talking to the team in the trailer

Yes, the dark days of the Allura should stay/go back to the kitchen castle arguments and the troll level denial of Haggar being Lotor’s mom. Don’t remind me. The staff are very kind passionate people, but being put on the spot like that will force them to outright lie because massive spoilers. It’s how people twist their words and then attack them for it. Josh in particular didn’t do many interviews, so while many learned to go around these asks, the poor man was cornered.

They won’t be able to be fully honest until the show is over, and like I mentioned before I choose to ignore word of god for these reasons. The parallels between Acxa and Krolia are uncanny, as well as the resemblance. Heck seeing Krolia in the lighting of the castle shows she’s blue. I feel like that conspiracy board because why would Krolia not mention the second child -I’m guessing classic trope of baby was presumed dead or sent away and was found by Lotor or Alteans or something-

I’m suspecting that Acxa only gets Hunk, since it seemed like the Cruiser -Narti is that you that picked them up- caught the yellow lion only, and it had Hunk and Romelle. She and the gang are also missing limbs and aged so there is a lot to be excited for. Her noble demon qualities mixed with her chronic backstabbing disorder can make for an interesting dynamic that has us guessing her intentions. She is Lotor’s protege after all so even being an honorable warrior doesn’t mean she isn’t capable of surprises.

During s3-s4 I abhorred the sibling theory, I hated it with every inch of my being, but seeing Krolia in s5 sold me instantly and I could not deny it. Like many I dropped the theory after s6, but then this came up to me today and I thought to myself, am I delusional, am I being fucked with by the show again? And the answer would be yes, because those Krolia and Acxa eyes are identical to a T. Makes it more fuckey when you compare trophy husband’s eyes, that Keith got. Acxa has the thicker eyebrows and the upper bend, something that Keith also has. Let’s go full exploding brain here a bit.

For pure argument sake I will be ignoring that Josh interview, because listening to it, he was panicking when put on the spot -and I dislike how he was- and let’s focus on this only and the classic lost sibling trope in old school shounen anime. First is the robot romance trilogy, which shaped the genre that inspired Golion, we’ll see it’s a rather common trope to have the reveal of the hero has a sibling or relative or both in the evil empire in the genre, and in the case of the trilogy it shows up in the second installment, the darker and edgier of the three.

We have Voltes V 1977 that reveals our protagonist and antagonist are brothers

Predating the robot romance trilogy is UFO Robo Grendizer 1975 that had Duke and Maria

We have one of the best in the genre, Godmars 1981 that has the brothers Mars and Marg

This barely scratching the surface here. It’s such a common trope it’s almost expected. The sibling varies from misguided to noble demon to outright heroic mole. The parents are either evil or dead, or one is still alive but rarely is the family reunion a happy one by the end, it always ends in tragedy for them or others.

Now the big killer of this -now more crack than ever- theory is that we saw baby Keith. Well, like @captain-vulture used to constantly point out, it’s very easy for Krolia to have been pregnant again when she went back into space, seeing that Keith and Acxa seem close in age, with him being around a year older. It’s a killed theory at this point, but the show has a habit of going bitch you thought. I also like to point out that sometimes creators are forced to lie in interviews when put on the spot. It happened with Galra keith theory way back.

There is something poetic about the fact that for months, fandom has insisted that Lotor will kill Haggar personally and horrifically, and then “find out” she’s Honerva and angst about personally fridging his mom, leading to his development, only to turn out that he is killed for her development. Same thing with Zarkon, for months people insisted that Haggar was nothing to him, and that he had a fridged Altean wife in the past that motivated his actions, or that Haggar will die and he’ll go even more insane, but in the end, he dies for her development. I talked before how in spite of the show moving forward, fandoms insist on being static, but this is by far one of the best examples that shows what a great show Voltron is. They fridged the husband and son so that Haggar can have a personal grudge against the team during the final arc, not the other way around. The mother and wife survives, the husband and son do not. That is so pathetically rare.
