captain-vulture:

You know, I really feel for Ezor this season. These fears are not hollow or overreaction, they’re some legit adult fear in the face of a horrible possibility. It’s noting how traumatized Ezor is from the whole Lotor experience. Cause it’s not like Ezor’s living in squalor like Acxa had, Ezor’s got her own fleet with loyal pirates and her big pirate gf. And yet, she stills worries. We know Narti’s death meant a great deal to her back then in s4ep3, and we see evidence of that creeping back in here in s7.

Lotor is not just some crazed lunatic, he’s genuinely a bad person, one who’s willing to do whatever it takes to get what he wants. Ezor saw what he did to Narti, and heard what he did to those Alteans. He himself proclaimed what he planned to do to the galra once he had his empire. Ezor is no idealistic fool like Acxa, she knows evil and understands the depth of power Lotor has with the Sincline robot.

It makes her actions in s7ep3 all the more sympathetic. Yeah she was torturing Pidge and getting a kick out of deriding Acxa and wrecking Keith, but those are just distractions from the concerns she legit has. Even in her intimidation at Team Voltron’s interrogation, we can see elements of that fear she showed at the beginning with Zethrid.

We know she’s lying here, earlier we saw her telling Zethrid how she’s worried that Lotor might still be around. It’s pretty obvious from these two scenes that a source of comfort for Ezor has always been that if nothing came from that explosion all those years ago that made Voltron disappear, then Lotor will never come back. It tells us too, that this fear is a reoccurring one, one that nagged away at Ezor even years after Lotor disappeared.

And Ezor tries to cover that up with her derision. When she mocks Acxa later on, it’s not just cause Acxa put her morals over their team again (though I wouldn’t doubt that played a part in it).

It’s also Ezor trying to distract herself from all her worst fears coming to fruition at once. Acxa herself broke away from Lotor yeah, but there’s no better way to agitate Ezor’s fears then for Lotor’s former loyal lap brat to make an appearance just as Voltron returned. Ezor’s words here tells us it’s been a while since they’ve seen Acxa, in fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if they haven’t seen her since she left all those years ago. Ezor doesn’t know what Acxa’s been up to, what’re Acxa’s plans, or what did Acxa’s “I’ve got to find my own path” meant. For all she knew, Acxa was a liar and schemer that was in with Lotor and when shit hit the fan fucked off to the Universe knows where on some morality stunt. It’s like a horrible reminder for Ezor of all the bad things she experienced long past.

That’s why Ezor attacks Acxa so harshly in their conversation. Belittles her dedication to her morals and her cause to just a crush she’s got on one dude. To Ezor, it makes things seem a little less intimidating, and much more manageable. Which gets me to my main point.

It’s pretty clear that Ezor’s love of torture and mockery are defense mechanisms Ezor developed to ward away any fear she has. As @blacklionshiro pointed out before me, Ezor is a survivor, and seen a lot of shit in her life and has had to escape some difficult situations before. She deals with this shit with it by trivializing it, by making herself out to be the stronger person. We saw this back in s3ep2, where she called the Lions of Voltron, the Universe’s most powerful weapon at the time, mere kitties. Despite her bravado and evil grins, she’s a very anxious and traumatized person*.

*she’s still evil but very complex in so. they wrote her very well and I appreciate that.

the Galra and Vampires

captain-vulture:

I’ve never really made much of a deal bout this but I’ve never been a fan of giving the galra animalistic (usually cat-like) traits such as bleping. To me, that kind of thing doesn’t really go along with how the show presents the galra. They’re not really meant to be space cats, but really, are meant to be space vampires.

The creators themselves compared the Galra Royal family to vampires, which makes sense. Zarkon is almost entirely driven to find Voltron since the beginning to use it to farm quintessence from the rift.

In a sense, it’s very similar to how  vampires usually are depicted as entities entirely driven by the search for blood. Much in the same way vampires hunt down people to suck their blood, the galra will go great lengths to acquire quintessence and the resources to obtain quintessence. Hence all the mining colonies we see from the beginning in s1, where as pointed out in the show, the galra took without giving back to the point that the colonies nearly died (like the Balmera). Very much in the same way we’d see vampires suck their victims dry of the blood their victim need.

And we see this most importantly in the designs of the characters themselves. There’s a reason why there’s not really a uniform galra look in the same way all Alteans are space elves. Cause like vampires in history, the galra have a varied look. The only things that define galra are the jaundiced eyes, blue or purple skin (like a corpse), pointy carnivorous teeth, and long talons. All of which are found in vampires across many cultures.

with the sibling theory for all we know, krolia DID tell Keith about acxa, but Keith doesn’t know that galra he met in the weblum is called acxa so he wouldn’t necessarily make the connection, especially as there was so much else going on.

You might be on to something! I’m also thinking, what if Krolia herself doesn’t even know her daughter? Presumed dead as a baby or sent away? When the hanger was breached the images of Acxa and Ezor flashed so Krolia would have seen her. But if she didn’t see her I can understand, since by the time they got to the ships Acxa flew off without Krolia seeing her face. Krolia recognized Keith by his blade after all. As much as there is proof of this theory there are just as many holes that make my brain make the record screech sound. At this point I’m just throwing concepts like baby sent away and found by Lotor who had her raised in the military or put in an orphanage and picked her up when she grew a bit older, or baby was presumed dead or lost. Anything to explain the circumstances because Krolia was clearly not fond of leaving her first child, let alone a second one. Then I think I’m just being delusional but dude look at this

No way it’s a coincidence! The exact same shape and design. Not to mention the shooting scene followed by the blade scene that mirrored Keith. Acxa was also introduced in the very same episode where Keith’s potential family was brought up. At this point I’m just waiting for the show to give me the explanation because I believe it but don’t know how it’ll be executed. It’s a mecha anime with heavy 80s vibes at least one sibling reveal is bound to happen.

I agree with you 100%. I believed they were siblings since s4 and onward. I dropped the twins theory after the flashback so I now believe Krolia was pregnant with Acxa when she left Tex (Heith?). The creative team doesn’t exactly have the best track record of being completely honest before a season is released (remember when they said Allura wasn’t Paladin material right before S3?) so I can’t take Josh seriously. We’ll find out the deal in S7 since Acxa was talking to the team in the trailer

Yes, the dark days of the Allura should stay/go back to the kitchen castle arguments and the troll level denial of Haggar being Lotor’s mom. Don’t remind me. The staff are very kind passionate people, but being put on the spot like that will force them to outright lie because massive spoilers. It’s how people twist their words and then attack them for it. Josh in particular didn’t do many interviews, so while many learned to go around these asks, the poor man was cornered.

They won’t be able to be fully honest until the show is over, and like I mentioned before I choose to ignore word of god for these reasons. The parallels between Acxa and Krolia are uncanny, as well as the resemblance. Heck seeing Krolia in the lighting of the castle shows she’s blue. I feel like that conspiracy board because why would Krolia not mention the second child -I’m guessing classic trope of baby was presumed dead or sent away and was found by Lotor or Alteans or something-

I’m suspecting that Acxa only gets Hunk, since it seemed like the Cruiser -Narti is that you that picked them up- caught the yellow lion only, and it had Hunk and Romelle. She and the gang are also missing limbs and aged so there is a lot to be excited for. Her noble demon qualities mixed with her chronic backstabbing disorder can make for an interesting dynamic that has us guessing her intentions. She is Lotor’s protege after all so even being an honorable warrior doesn’t mean she isn’t capable of surprises.

During s3-s4 I abhorred the sibling theory, I hated it with every inch of my being, but seeing Krolia in s5 sold me instantly and I could not deny it. Like many I dropped the theory after s6, but then this came up to me today and I thought to myself, am I delusional, am I being fucked with by the show again? And the answer would be yes, because those Krolia and Acxa eyes are identical to a T. Makes it more fuckey when you compare trophy husband’s eyes, that Keith got. Acxa has the thicker eyebrows and the upper bend, something that Keith also has. Let’s go full exploding brain here a bit.

For pure argument sake I will be ignoring that Josh interview, because listening to it, he was panicking when put on the spot -and I dislike how he was- and let’s focus on this only and the classic lost sibling trope in old school shounen anime. First is the robot romance trilogy, which shaped the genre that inspired Golion, we’ll see it’s a rather common trope to have the reveal of the hero has a sibling or relative or both in the evil empire in the genre, and in the case of the trilogy it shows up in the second installment, the darker and edgier of the three.

We have Voltes V 1977 that reveals our protagonist and antagonist are brothers

image
image

Predating the robot romance trilogy is UFO Robo Grendizer 1975 that had Duke and Maria

image
image

We have one of the best in the genre, Godmars 1981 that has the brothers Mars and Marg

This barely scratching the surface here. It’s such a common trope it’s almost expected. The sibling varies from misguided to noble demon to outright heroic mole. The parents are either evil or dead, or one is still alive but rarely is the family reunion a happy one by the end, it always ends in tragedy for them or others.

Now the big killer of this -now more crack than ever- theory is that we saw baby Keith. Well, like @captain-vulture used to constantly point out, it’s very easy for Krolia to have been pregnant again when she went back into space, seeing that Keith and Acxa seem close in age, with him being around a year older. It’s a killed theory at this point, but the show has a habit of going bitch you thought. I also like to point out that sometimes creators are forced to lie in interviews when put on the spot. It happened with Galra keith theory way back.
