I know how Tali @eatyourgrapes has already pointed this out before me and more poetically written but I absolutely adore how after s6 this line has a double meaning. Cause yes he was talking directly bout Lotor’s reign as emperor pro-tem but it also applies to Lotor’s own reign as official emperor of the empire. Like really the time distance between this

is what three or four months? A black spot on the empire for years to come indeed.
What gets me though, is that Zarkon’s words here are foreshadowing and not just for Lotor’s downfall. Cause if we’re to take his words for what they are, then the implication is that who ever succeeds Lotor as the leader of the Galra will probably outlast him by a long shot. And as such will truly make Lotor’s own rule a dark spot on the empire for years to come(not using galra emperor here, cause the implication is that theyll probably outlive the end of the show, long past the empire’s final collapse.)
