Haggar and Lotor

voltronfandomhag:

Today in my second post discussing the platonic relationships of DoTU, I’ll be taking a look at the dynamic between Haggar and Lotor. What was their relationship like in its original form?

It should be noted that while Honerva was Sincline’s grandmother in GoLion, Haggar and Lotor are not related in Voltron. This, to me, makes Haggar’s motives in regards to Lotor less straightforward and more open to interpretation. There are times in DoTU where Haggar sticks her neck out for Lotor and even saves his life, the most notable example being in the episode “The Sincerest Form of Flattery”. Lotor invokes Right of Might, which is a duel to the death for the throne, on his father. Things do not go well for Lotor and he quickly finds himself on his knees asking Zarkon for forgiveness. Just before Zarkon can disown him in the most permanent way possible, Haggar dashes into the arena to reason with Zarkon.

Where do people download voltron outside of Pirate Bay? I dislike that site so my only option is kimcartoons. But those have watermarks that at times are too noticeable and ruin gifs. What other options are out there.

I’m setting up a separate blog for all the gifs of pretty animation sequences I love. Basically all the cool stuff you follow me for and without the walls of texts and the Opinions. I’m still thinking about where I should post my gifs now, since I’m making some in the single gif aesthetic format. I’m thinking of sticking to main in posting that and sideblog is just what I always wished my blog would be, if I was not so Me.

The thing that gets me though, yes it removed some kind of hold the quintessence had but she is still essentially evil so what kind of power/insight did she gain? Why allow Haggar in (if she didn’t corrupt the process) and not Lotor?

Thing is my dude, is that the admission to the secrets of Oriande ain’t related to the morality the wanting to enter is, but to their grasp on knowledge, the depth of their understanding of nature. When we look back at the trails of Oriande, they weren’t tests of goodness of heart, no, they were tests on the inventiveness and dedication of the person in question.

To give an example – look back at the trail with the worm-hole lookalikes. When the ceiling begins to fall, Lotor himself remarks how there must be a clue that’ll tell help them escape the trap.

Lotor himself overlooks the castleship-like controls and turns away from it, but Allura recognizes it and rightfully connects its design back to the castleship.

Note how subtle the pillars are. They aren’t direct copies of the castleship itself, yet Allura was able to recognize it as technology that she has used before. That’s a sign of innovativeness – Allura was able use her prior knowledge and repurpose it to apply it to the situation at hand. And while under pressure too – people usually crack when pushed to the edge and forget stuff – Allura here does not. What does this tells us? Not only is she a creative thinker, but also that she’s an active scholar as well. She trained how to operate the castle of lions and is engrossed in it – she tried to learn it all.

We see this also with the trail afterwards – when they are being attacked by the White Lion. Again they’re under pressure of their lives, but Allura recognizes that in order to gain knowledge, she must give something in return, which she does.

This tells us that Allura was willing to die to get that knowledge – to give herself up. This is the mark of the true knowledge-seeker. They want knowledge to for knowledge’s sake. To innovate, to advance. And Allura demostrates that here.

But Lotor?

wait, i could of swore i saw i saw haggar’s marks glow as she approached it. granted i only saw s6 once so i could be remembering details wrong.

See, they did, except, by all accounts, they shouldn’t.

Allura flat-out says back in s5e5 that Honerva wasn’t a sacred Altean. Again, Honerva’s heavily associated with, and empowered by the Rift Entity which Voltron fought against. And again, our glimpses of Haggar on Oriande in s6e1 are the White Lion, much bigger and more aggressive than before, lunging to attack… and the statues of the Life Givers attacking Haggar, with much more of them leaving their seats to attack than they did Lotor and Allura in s5e6.

That’s what makes me suspect Haggar cheated her way in somehow. She’s not playing by any of the values that the Lion Goddess seems to uphold. There’s no reason that entity should want to help her at this point, especially when it doesn’t seem to have given Haggar a particular change in moral perspective.

The oracles don’t really care for morality it seems, since they allowed Lotor in to begin with. They value knowledge and how far you’d go to reach it. While Honerva was not allowed in, it seems that Haggar was, because she reached levels of knowledge so high and had rift infused quintessence in her veins, just as Lotor is. The oracles allowed Lotor in and had his marks glow, despite what he committed against fellow Alteans. They gave him a chance to access due to the knowledge he achieved. The pursuit for Altean alchemy seems to be the reason most are in. Why is Haggar assumed to cheat her way in? She was presenting her powers to the oracles, who reacted with hostility to Allura and Lotor when they entered as well. The oracles don’t care what you did to achieve your alchemic knowledge, so long as you did. Haggar easily walked in and out as if she’s just as entitled of being there as anyone else who is allowed to enter.

Allura didn’t pass because she is a moral person, but because she showed she’s willing to give her life away for the knowledge. Lotor did not pass because he still valued his own life. It’s very easy to see Haggar pass seeing that she’s sharp enough to know what the oracles are looking for. You can’t cheat gods by making your markings glow it doesn’t work like that from what the show established.
