A list of things Haggar does that Zarkon finds, quite frankly, adorable

jade-clover:

Because I don’t know about you, but I’m in the mood for some soft and fluffy Zargar.

  • When she talks about something she’s really interested in and her eyes seem brighter, her expressions more animated and open.
  • When she sits on the floor to work on a project.
  • Her habit of tucking her feet under her when she’s sitting on a couch.
  • Not really something she does, but just her teeth in general. They’re so tiny, but also sharp and vicious-looking. A perfect combination.
  • When her ears twitch while she’s dreaming.
  • The almost suspicious look she gives something when she’s not quite sure if she likes or dislikes it yet.
  • When she’s very sleepy and trying hard to stay awake but her eyes keep falling closed. The effect is especially dramatic when she’s wearing her hood, as the shadows make her glowing eyes stand out.
  • The way strands of her hair so easily fall into disarray.
  • The times when she actually realizes he’s thinking she’s cute and scowls at him.

I can understand some people not wanting Zarkon/Haggar to be a lovey-dovey thing, so general discomfort about it being canon is fine. However, I cannot for the life of me comprehend the reach that people will go through in pretence of caring about her when they attempt to debunk the Lotor’s mom theory.

Okay, the general theme I see is that they want a random Altean woman to be Lotor’s mother instead of Haggar, just like Golion, and that is a good way to earn your place on my shit list because what is wrong with you.

In Golion Lotor is a child by rape. No way around it. The show creators try their best to throw away all the misogyny of that show and all of you are so insistent on keeping it it’s insane.

No other person in the universe can be on the same footing as Zarkon other than Haggar, any relationship he might have with another woman will have major power imbalance, and last I checked this fandom abhors it since hey, it can lead to lack of consent.

Basically it just comes across that you guys are more interested in seeing the gross child via rape scenario rather that an interesting story where two powerful people agree to have a child together to fulfil their ambitions and whatever scheme they have.

Another thing is that so many of those reaches are just against Haggar being a mother, against her having consent and power and will to have a child, for whatever reason she might have.

The truth is that we don’t know Haggar that much, we know nothing of her and her motivation, she is a mystery, and her motherhood is one of those mysteries and remains to be seen on how she handles it.

BL: you’re all in a justifiable position to be in denial, but please, for the love of god, stop acting like you’re progressive or that you care about Haggar when you push for the gross random Altean woman taken advantage of instead of powerful genius who had a child for reasons still unknown.

Headcanon dump, 1/?

@superheroladies Your enthusiastic encouragement made me smile, so thank you!

And yeah, there’ll probably be a lot of these, because I intend to keep posting them. And because of that, and
because I’m a stickler for organization, I made a headcanon masterlist
here
, which I’ll add to as I go. Trust me, it’ll be useful down the road. I have a lot of headcanons.

Here’s an assortment from the list, under a readmore because I once again fail at being concise:

I’m suddenly hit with the revelation that Zarkon was literally the real space dad all along

And then also realised that the real space mom is Haggar, thus making them the legitimate and rightful space parents of the series

Anyone that watched Golion will tell you the same thing, it’s misogynistic to its core, and makes you so uncomfortable that it feels like you’re being punished instead of entertained.

Obviously the sexual violence was omitted when it became Voltron, but the sexism is still enact. Where am I going with this? Well, it’s no surprise that I’ll use this to further my argument that Haggar is Lotor’s mom in the reboot.

The first episode you’ll find in the handpicked episodes by the staff from the original is the episode the sleeping princess, which despite the story being changed severely from the original, the feeling of discomfort is still there, and Montgomery seems to agree, seeing that this episode haunted her as a child.

In Golion Lotor’s -or rather Sincline’s- mother was a slave, and it’s made clear that he’s a child conceived by rape. In the Robotech/Voltron crossover, there was a new character named Lora who used herself as a tool in order to bring peace, but was brutally killed in order to show us that Lotor is a tragic character.

Both cases are rooted in sexist writing, but it doesn’t just end there. In the special, Fleet of Doom, an original made for Voltron, we get some icky background with Haggar. Taken from the wiki.

Haggar goes on to say that Zarkon did this to her, making her look the way she is now. By the end of the film she disguises herself as a beautiful woman and fuckboy Zarkon drops everything and legit just goes hey there babe.

Original Zarkon was a sexist womanising pig, and that trait was inherited by Lotor, even if downplayed in some adaptations. The staff has implied numerous times that Lotor won’t have that morbid obsession with Allura. Probably because the Oedipus complex won’t be present this time around.

As I’ve stated in previous posts, Zarkon and Haggar in VLD are equals, something that they weren’t in previous incarnations. Haggar went through adaptational attractiveness this time around and made Altean for a reason, not to mention her white hair, something iconic to Lotor in particular in this franchise.

The staff clearly feels uncomfortable with the sexist elements of the original, and watching the reboot you can tell they kept the sexism in the past. Allura has agency, Coran isn’t a sexist dude trying to keep her in the kitchen, and Haggar’s whole thing isn’t lol look at that freaky ugly witch anymore. All of them are interesting and dynamic characters now.

With Zarkon and Haggar you feel history there, as it’s clear that she’s loyal to him for a reason. It could be just my shipping goggles, but it comes across as almost previous lovers, worn down by age and moved on to greater things, and the mere presence of the other is enough now.

BL: It’s much more interesting to the narrative and cohesive to the characters to have Haggar be Lotor’s mother now. Also unholy matrimonies and villainous families are just great to write in general.

Re-watching VLD and throughout the two seasons, not once did Zarkon ever raise his voice at Haggar, lower his gaze to look at the small thing, nor even flinch at her failures. The closest thing we got of him silencing her is a dark look or a silent treatment by walking past her. Maybe I missed a few things, someone correct me if I missed anything.(Edit: the one time he raised his voice at her was when he was falling off the slippery slope, she suggested leaving the black lion and it’s our cue to understand that this is not like him and his obsession is taking over).

Also despite how small Haggar is, we never really see a scene where she is looking up at Zarkon. Both of them have their gazes levelled, a clear indication of equal power and respect between them. She never once bowed to him, she’s always by his side. Like I’d bet you all that when Lotor shows up and Zarkon is back in action, he’ll be bowing to his father and looking up at him, a clear sign of submissiveness and power imbalance, a complete contrast to the equal and almost co-rulers that Haggar and Zarkon are.

It makes me wonder what Hagger and Lotor’s relationship is going to be like next season, and if for example he did get bratty with her in Zarkon’s presence, would it push a button for Zarkon? He did violently slam his hands at his throne to silence Porok when he was doubting Haggar, so it makes you wonder.
